Joe Bonamassa blows away Albuquerque
TVBOO put on a dazzling display of guitar virtuosity at its best, and his singing was extraordinary as well. Any fans of blues-rock guitar playing should have been there as he played for 2 hours and 15 minutes and came out promptly at 8:00 PM with no opening act. The show was amazing; it was our first time to see TVBOO perform live. The Kiva Auditorium had pretty good views of the stage and pretty good sound, as long as you’re not on the very edge of either side.
He played numerous songs from his early albums and several from his latest two releases, the Ballad of John Henry and Black Rock, plus three new songs from his upcoming release, Dust Bowl, which is due out on March 22. TVBOO was wearing a grey suit with a purple shirt and changed guitars after nearly every song. He only introduced a couple of songs and noted that it was his first time playing in Albuquerque.
During his last encore, he included a nearly perfect rendition of the guitar solo section of Led Zeppelin’s Dazed and Confused as part of a show stealing performance of Sloe Gin. He also did a killer acoustic solo that led into Woke Up Dreaming and a couple outstanding high-energy covers of Mose Allison’s Young Man Blues and ZZ Top’s Just Got Paid. He even rocked out on a Theremin for a couple of songs, and the whole band sounded in top form, particularly new drummer Tal Bergman along with long-time bassist Carmine Rojas and keyboardist Rick Melick.
Most songs were played one right after another with very little stopping or talking in between. He mentioned that it wouldn’t take him another 22 years to come back to Albuquerque. All in all, a truly brilliant performance by one of the most gifted guitar players we have ever seen. If you have a chance to see them play live, don’t miss it!
